Silicon carbide (SiC) is a high-performance ceramic material made of high-quality, non-oxide powders and can be manufactured to the specific requirements of a wide range of appliions. Due to its excellent tribological properties in coination with low weight, universal chemical resistance and ready availability, SiC is a frequently used
The ability to print near-net shapes in silicon carbide will increase design freedom and reduce production cost/time. This research will therefore have significant impact for space exploration. This development effort will generate new knowledge about the additive manufacturing of silicon carbide and enable the production of silicon carbide mirrors.
Start with one of our telescope mirror kits. Each kit comes with a telescope mirror blank and all the abrasives (silicon carbide grits and white aluminum oxide powders), cerium oxide polish and pitch to grind and polish it to your specifiions. Please note that our kits do not include a grinding tool or pitch lap.
Silicon carbide is also used in commercial appliions such as lightweight scan mirrors, semiconductor wafer handling, and reflective imaging systems. AOS has pioneered an industry-leading process for manufacturing SiC optics for industry, defense, and research appliions. We produce more SiC optics than anyone else in North America.

We selected silicon-carbide (SiC), which has relatively good specific stiffness and thermal stability (see Figure 1) 2, as the mirror material for the first Japanese IR space telescope mission, AKARI. 3 For this purpose, we developed a special SiC material that is composed of a porous lightweight core and a dense chemical vapor deposition (CVD
Here we used a 84922 silicon grinding stone to achieve smooth, thick lines. Tip: Extensive force is not required here. By applying a gentle touch you can get the effect you are looking for without damaging your mirror. Have fun with your designs! Check out our design templates for fun and functional ideas. We love the "mustache try-on center"!
space-borne mirrors and structures, cryogenic mirrors, fast response scan mirrors, and high heat flux appliions, thanks to its unique coination of key enabling properties. CERAFORM SiC is an optical grade reaction bonded silicon carbide, consisting of a ceramic matrix of free silicon containing a . bimodal distribution of SiC grains.
Biconic mirrors have two different radii on one surface. It is possible to make a biconic mirror with spherical curves or aspheric curves, depending on the appliion and need to eliminate aberrations. When appropriately designed, they can replace common 90° bending mirrors to recollimate a laser beam in a long delivery path.
In this video, Bob demonstrates how to use loose grit silicon carbide to grind your glass by hand without using any machinery at all. A fairly straightforwar
The advent of synchrotron radiation (SR) sources and high energy lasers (HEL) in recent years has brought about the need for optical materials that can withstand the harsh operating conditions in such devices. The SR mirrors must be ultra-high vacuum compatible, must withstand intense X-ray irradiation without surface damage, must maintain surface figure under thermal loading …

Aug 09, 2016· Nonetheless, in recent years, developers around the world have been honing silicon carbide mirror manufacturing technologies to enable the production of large-scale silicon carbide mirrors for use in telescopes. 1–4 For example, the 3.5m-diameter primary mirror of the Herschel Space Observatory was fabried in this way. Indeed, this …
Read how silicon carbide is an excellent material for fabriing optical mirrors because it coines high hardness, high stiffness, low density, high thermal conductivity, and low coefficient of thermal expansion with corrosion resistance and a long life.
Jul 03, 2019· Silicon substrates are attractive because of the significantly lower cost perspective and the ability to use standard semiconductor processing lines. While industry is mainly working on wafers with diameters of 150 mm for GaN devices, imec has pioneered the development of the technology on 200 mm silicon wafers.

Lighter and harder than steel, absolutely scratch-resistant and with a mirror-like surface that feels pleasingly soft. This unique coination of properties makes ceramic an ideal material for watches. IWC is a trailblazer in the field and has been making ceramic cases for various watches over a period of almost 30 years.
Mirrors, made from copper substrates, will withstand extremely high laser powers and industrial environments, providing diffraction limited focusing when properly mounted and aligned. Copper mirrors are available with a higher reflectivity and durable molybdenum overcoating. This allows for the mirror’s easy cleaning.
